Holy Japanese Baby Mobile, Batman!

While I was visiting family and friends in Reardan this past week, my mom dug out my baby mobile, a long-ago gift from my Aunt Jamie. I know, WOW. My aunt was living in Japan when I was born and (I'm guessing) went to the market to search out the most "stunning" mobile she could find. I can almost hear her giggling. (I think this was a separate shopping trip from when she sent me a drum for Christmas. Apparently you can get back at your siblings for the years of torture they've inflicted...)

Anyway, back to the mobile. My mom swears that it was working when she put it away, but something happened during its 25-or-so years in storage and it wouldn't play anymore. Luckily, my dad is somewhat mechanically inclined and good with a soldering iron, and after a couple hours and a surprising absence of swear words, the mobile was back in action. The tune is not nearly as annoying as the design would lead you to believe. And of course, Hannah LOVES it. Who needs Baby Einstein when you have a marvel of Japanese engineering like this? Oh, and the best part is, that picture is only half the mobile- after a couple hours, my mom remembered that there was more:

Yes, that's right, a bird house, of course. I know you were thinking that the tulip-surrounded-by-flower-petals mobile was nice, and all, but it would have been really stunning with a bird house. Wish granted.

My only question is how exactly would one incorporate this into their nursery decor, assuming that you didn't think to decorate the baby's room in 8 shades of neon?

Now I feel embarassed about sending that to you when you were an infant. I am proud that you turned out as well as you did, because the memory of the neon, birdhouse mobile could have marked you for life, Katie. It was just that it was "so Japanese"...I could not resist it at the time! Forgive me! What was I thinking? Love, A.J.

I covet this mobile. That is one SERIOUS decoration. Think of the room you could build around it!

Wow! I am so sad that I did not think to pick up something like this when I was in Taiwan. What a lost opportunity. I hope that Henry will forgive me.
