Spa Story

First of all, here's what everyone really wants to see: the belly. I'm not going to argue that a little makeup wouldn't have been a good idea, but after not sleeping well for a week or so now and being kicked in the ribs all day (as my friend Trish wondered during her pregnancy, how is there still room for the baby to get a backswing in there?), a smile was about all I could muster.

Now for the spa story: Last Thursday, I went to the very schmancy Lake Austin Spa for a mom-to-be day away, a very thoughtful Valentine's present from Nick. The spa was amazing. My package included a massage, manicure, pedicure, use of the gorgeous facilities (including a pool), and lunch. All the treatments were awesome- my feet have been hurting like someone comes in at night and beats the soles with a baseball bat, so both the massage and pedicure really hit the spot.

Lunch was delicious, too, but I realized when I got the menu that I was going to have a little problem. The Lake Austin Spa is apparently one of those health spas- next to each menu item was the number of calories and fat grams it contained. I appreciated the opportunity to make an informed decision, although in my case I was looking for the course combination that yielded the maximum number of calories. The "heaviest" offering- an eggplant parmesan sandwich- checked in at a whopping 315 calories.

My package came with (thank goodness) soup, salad, entree and dessert. I went with watermelon gazpacho, fruit salad, the eggplant parmesan sandwich (plus the optional slice of salami), and the swirl frozen yogurt (fat-free fro-yo was the only dessert option...). It was all delicious, absolutely perfect, although the sandwich was made with the smallest eggplant I have ever seen- the whole entree was probably 3 inches in diameter and the salami was sliced so thin as to nearly be invisible. It is the only time in my life that I have eaten a four-course meal and thought, "Well, I'm not exactly still starving." The mom-to-be day is one of the spa's package options; I really think they ought to include a couple candy bars in the goodie bag, or a double-calorie entree option (it could be a secret off-menu item) for those of us who are packing along an extra mouth.
